Pork KPIs – Performance (Financial)

Financial KPIs show if your business is profitable. They are the most important KPIs as they are linked to all other KPIs since they all have costs associated with them. Financial KPIs can be a measure of how much it costs to produce each kilogram of pork or cost per weaned pig.

Total Cost/d.wt kg output

What is this?

A measure of how much it costs to produce each kg of pork

Why is it important?

If your costs are less than your value then your business will run at a profit. When costs exceed value (you pay more than you recieve) the business runs at a loss. There is a link between efficent businesses and those that have a lower overall environmental footprint.

Data Inputs
  • Total kg d.wt produced
  • Total costs of production
Benchmarks
  • Average
  • Top 10%
How to calculate

Total costs for fixed period

Total deadweight produced in same period

Tools and resources

The financial KPIs are the most important as they are linked by outcome to all others in simple terms: health, carcase performance and fertility all have costs associated with them.

We provide a range of cost of production calculators and benchmarking information on our Pork Costings and Herd Performance page.

Cost per weaned pig

What is this?

For breeding units this is financial measure that shows if your business is profitable

Why is it important?

If the cost of rearing a weaned pig is lower than its market value then the business will run at a loss.

Data Inputs
  • Value of piglets
  • Number of piglets weaned
  • Total costs
Benchmarks
  • Average
  • Top 10%
How to calculate

Total number of pigs produced in a fixed period x value of each pig

Total production costs for the same period

Tools and resources

For breeding units, financial measures are just as important but calculated on a per head basis (£/piglet or £/head) rather than a value per unit of finished weight such as ppkg or total cost/d.wt kg. The same resources can be used as well as resources that maximise the value of the product i.e. shift more piglets into favourable weight categories e.g. 8kg+

AHDB provides a range of cost calculators and benchmarking information split between indoor and outdoor production systems on our Pork Costings and Herd Performance pages.

We also offer a range of materials in the AHDB knowledge library
