Beef & Lamb Strategic Farmers Richard and Laila Carruthers, Rawfoot
Rawfoot Farm is managed by Richard Carruthers along with his wife Leila. Richard grew up on a tenanted farm where they are now in their 50th year of tenancy.
Richard was brought up on the tenanted family farm which is now in its 50th year of tenancy. He worked away from the farm in his younger days at a landscaping and dry stone walling business. He then returned and took over the farm business around 20 years ago, from his parents.
Richard says: “In the past five years we’ve moved away gradually from more traditional farming methods to looking at genetics and grazing methods in more detail. The reason I applied to the programme was because I felt I needed to learn a more resilient farming style in order to be able to continue livestock production on an upland farm which can't hide its production costs with generous support payments.
“I’m looking forward to being introduced to new technology and being guided by industry leaders and mentored by forward thinking likeminded farmers.”
