About Cambridge Monitor Farm

  • Oldfield Farm (320 ha) joined the Farm Excellence Programme in 2022
  • Host farmer Matt Redman started his contracting business in 2012
  • He took on a farm business tenancy (FBT) with Cambridgeshire County Council in 2017
  • The rotation includes winter and spring wheat, spring barley, winter and spring beans, spring peas, winter linseed and oilseed rape
  • The farm also uses cover crops ahead of spring crops and participates in the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) pilot scheme

Labour and machinery review – 15 February 2023

During the winter season, a Labour & Machinery review was conducted at Cambridge Monitor Farm, the results were then discussed with Harry Henderson (AHDB Techinal Knowledge Exchange Manager).

Nutrition and reducing nitrogen usage – 7 December 2022

Matt was joined by Tom Martin (Cambridgeshire farmer also known as ‘Farmer Tom’) and Mark Topliff (Lead Analyst – Farm Economics, AHDB) to explore biological approaches to nutrition, ways to reduce nitrogen fertiliser use and the impact of rising input costs vs prices.

Soil health and introduction to integrating livestock – 9 November 2022

In the first winter meeting at Oldfield Farm, guest speaker Lizzie Sagoo (ADAS) explored how to best optimise soil health assessments and talked about practical apporaches to integrating livestock into arable rotations.

Launch meeting – 6 July 2022

Matt welcomed visitors on farm as a monitor farmer for the first time back in July 2022. In the meeting, he outlined the following topics of interest for the three-year programme:

  • Balancing business development with sustainability
  • Making regenerative and agroecological practices work on farm
  • Open up discussions around tenant farming
