EuroDairy – Biodiversity webinars

The main principles surrounding management for biodiversity

As part of the EuroDairy project, 40 pilot farms will have biodiversity audits undertaken to determine their biodiversity status and identify techniques being implemented to improve environmental performance.

In this webinar, dairy environmental expert Sophie Bertrand describes the approach she has taken to assess biodiversity on EuroDairy pilot farms, and some emerging results from the farms visited to date.

Best of both worlds: Dairy farming in a green environment

Alfred Scholten has two jobs. He is a dairy farmer and a forest ranger.

His dairy farm in Winterswijk (NL) is the core business. Growing arable land and biodiversity is directed to that main goal of feeding his 155 cows and closing his nutrient cycle onfarm.

Promoting biodiversity with Brian McCracken

Jason Rankin from AgriSearch visits one of Northern Ireland's pilot farmers, Brian McCracken, to learn more about how they promote biodiversity on their farm within an urban area.

Biosecurity: Best practice

Watch the video to learn more about the protocols put in place at Holly Green Farm to aim for a target of 0% mortality in their heifer replacements.

Beneficial interactions between agricultural practices and biodiversity

To the extent that biodiversity is now a key issue for consumers, dairy farmers are doubly committed to developing knowledge of their implications, providing answers to consumers and developing practices that benefit biodiversity and the farm.

Through the example of the Vernierfontaine fruit farm, we study how a group of breeders worked together to develop a better understanding of the beneficial interactions between their practices and biodiversity.

Assessing biodiversity on dairy farms: The Biotex tool

A presentation on the Biotex method and its application within the EuroDairy framework.

Two webinars on the principles of biodiversity

Within EuroDairy, biodiversity was a key focus and the presentations of the two webinars on the principles of biodiversity are available in this report:

  1. A presentation of emerging findings from biodiversity audits conducted on EuroDairy pilot farms during 2017
  2. A tutorial guide to the underlying rationale and practical use of the Biotex biodiversity assessment tool
