About Manor Farm Cirencester (2017 - 2021)

  • Beef and Lamb Strategic Farmer from 2017 until 2021

  • 103ha mixed farm in Gloucestershire

  • Spring calving suckler herd consisting of 60 South Devon and Sussex X Saler cows

  • Youngstock finished and sold deadweight

When David joined the Strategic Farm programme his aims were to:

  • Improve grassland management including implementing rotational grazing and improving silage quality
  • Reduce age at first calving
  • Reduce days to slaughter

The first priority for David was to improve his grassland management to reduce costs and improve beef performance. The first focus area was the grass silage; by cutting earlier and taking smaller cuts, David was able to improve its quality which helped reduce feed costs. David also implemented rotational grazing which resulted in an increase in cattle growth rates from 0.87 kg/day to 1.2 kg/day.

By implementing rotational grazing and making changes to the finishing ration, David was able to reduce days on farm by 115 days. David also invested in a new handling system which enabled him to track cattle performance effectively as well as administer medicines accurately.

Weighing cattle regularly also allowed David to reduce his average age at first calving from 30 months to 24. David was able to track their growth rates throughout their first winter to ensure they reached 65% of their mature weight before the breeding season. Further information on calving heifers at two years of age can be found here
