What I’m interested in is providing an easy facility for scouts to log their visits (location & date) to a field where they didn’t see anything to sample. At the moment they only log an event when they sample something and generate a sample ID. This could exist as a separate layer in the current FAB map which could be switched on or off in the same way as the Hutton alerts that are also displayed on the existing map. It would have to be quick and simple to do, just a couple of taps or they won’t bother. There would probably need to be a different ID number system held in a different database table but I wouldn’t have thought that would be much of a problem? The point of providing this facility is to help users of the FAB website see where and when monitoring activities have taken place and therefore that an area with no recorded outbreaks of blight may be due to the fact that nobody has looked for it. Recording the ‘zeroes’ is also vital for assessing the accuracy (or lack of it) of the various forecasting schemes that are employed to quantify risk of infection. Currently the “True Negative” rate from these schemes is vastly understated which adds a gloss of accuracy when trying to quantify their respective performance.
