SPP stable in the week ending 5 March

Wednesday, 9 March 2022

The EU-Spec SPP was stable in the latest week, rising 0.04p to 138.10p/kg. This follows a rise of over half a penny last week, and is set against a background of apparently strengthening sentiment in European pig prices. Reports of slightly tighter pig supplies on the continent are fuelling some cautious optimism that prices there could have turned a corner. If stronger spring demand follows, a real price recovery may even have begun.

Table showing GB pig prices

GB estimated slaughter in the week ending 5 March was 181,500 head. This is 7,200 head lower than in the previous week, and 8,700 fewer than in the same week last year. There was a slight decline in the average carcase weight in the SPP sample, by 470g to 94.44kg.

The EU-spec APP was down 0.28p in the week ending 26 February, at 143.64p/kg. The gap between the two series narrowed to 5.58p.
