SPP softens further as European trade flows adjust

For the week ended 19 September, the GB EU-spec SPP fell by just over a penny on the week to 159.80p/kg. Prices across the continent will continue to influence producer prices here as the European market finds its feet reordering trade flows. There are indications that British spot prices remain soft, albeit steady for now.

Only pigs lighter than 70kg did not drop in price, with those over 105kg losing the most, 4.8p/kg week on week. The average carcase weight was 86.29kg, 400g more than last week. Market reports suggest pigs have been rolled and in some cases were backing up on farm, increasing short term domestic supplies.

Weekly estimated slaughter totalled 198,000 head, slightly higher than last week, and more than 20,000 head higher than the same week last year.

The GB EU-spec APP fell to 164.35p/kg in the week ended 12 September. The gap between the APP and the SPP narrowed to 3.41p.

Unfortunately the sample size this week was not statistically robust enough to publish weaner prices in either the 7kg or 30kg categories.
