SPP rises again after last week’s pause

Wednesday, 8 June 2022

The EU-Spec SPP breached the 180p level for the first time in its history in the week ending 4 June, to average 180.57p/kg. This was a 3.84p rise on the week. Needless to say, the measure is still some way short of the latest estimated cost of production for May, at 240p/kg.

Estimated clean pig slaughter in the shorter week was 155,000 head. This is 29,000 fewer than the week before, with many abattoirs reportedly observing at least one of the bank holiday days.

Carcase weights fell compared with the week before, albeit slightly, to average 90.14kg. This is still a substantial 3.7kg heavier than a year ago.

The EU-Spec APP rose by 0.29p in the week ending 28 May to average 184.20p/kg.
