SPP falls further below last year’s levels

For the week ending 31 October, the EU-spec SPP declined further to average 156.14p/kg, down 0.47p on the previous week and down 1.57p on the same week in 2019. The SPP has now been below the same week last year for a second consecutive week.

Estimated slaughterings have dropped back over the last week and stand at 170,800 head, down 12,700 head on the previous week. Estimated slaughterings are now down in excess of 14,000 head compared to this time last year. This is likely to be due to the coronavirus pandemic limiting staff numbers and affecting output at some processors.

The average SPP carcase weight has now broken the 87kg barrier for the first time. Carcase weights increased week-on-week to average 87.19kg, an increase of 410g on the previous week, and 2.66kg on the same week last year.

The EU-spec APP totalled 161.25p/kg for the week ending 24 October, down 0.25p on the previous week. Prices have continued to follow a downwards trajectory for several months now, although they still remain 2.37p above last year’s levels and 12p above the five-year-average. The current gap between the APP and SPP has widened in the last week to 4.64p.

Weaner prices for 30kg stores in the week ending 31 October decreased week-on-week by £1.36 to total £52.87/head. This is still £1.68 up on the five-year-average of £51.19/head, but down on 2019 levels. 7kg weaner prices averaged £39.97/head for the week, down 89p on the same week last year.
