SPP continues downward trend

By Charlie Reeve
In the week ending 6 February, the EU-spec SPP moved further down on the previous week by 0.54p, to average 139.97p/kg. This puts the measure 22.77p below where it was at the same point last year and is the first time the EU-spec SPP has been below the 140p mark since April 2019.
Estimated throughput for the week totalled 182,300 head, up 7% week-on-week and up 1% on the same week last year.
Carcase weights averaged 90.52kg, nearly 1kg heavier than the previous week and 4.67kg heavier than this time last year. The lower kill level the previous week may have caused additional slaughter delays and so boosted weights again. A lot of interest remains around the potential impact of heavy pigs on the SPP and more information about this can be found here.

In the week ending 30 January, the EU-spec APP averaged 144.75p/kg, up 0.51p on the week. This bucked the trend of the SPP, which recorded a decline on the previous week and so widened the gap between the SPP and the APP to 4.24p. In the week before the APP had recorded a relatively large decline and so despite the slight upward movement prices are still on a downward trend overall.
Unfortunately, we were unable to publish a price for 30kg weaners this week. However, we have been able to report a 7kg weaner price again. In the week ending 6 February, 7kg weaners averaged £36.58/head, down by £2.13 on the previous week and down by £5.93 on the same week last year.
