Pig prices rise in the run-up to Christmas

Wednesday, 5 January 2022

In the week ending 25 December, the EU-Spec SPP increased by just over a penny, to 142.86p/kg. This brings the series closer to where it was at the beginning of the month and slightly lower than the start of the year, when prices were around 147p/kg. This is despite a strong increase in the cost of production throughout 2021, challenging profitability for many producers.

At 135,700 head, GB estimated slaughter was significantly lower than the week before, as might be expected and reflecting a shorter kill week. The average carcase weight stood at a substantial 92.35kg. This is the heaviest recorded since the SPP began in 2014, and 4.95kg heavier than in the same week last year.

The SPP for the week ended 1 January is scheduled to be published on Friday 7 January.
