Pig prices continue on upwards trajectory
Wednesday, 16 June 2021
By Charlie Reeve
In the week ending 12 June, the EU-spec SPP increased on the previous week by 0.79p, to average 155.82p/kg. This puts the measure 8.82p below where it was at the same point last year, but up 6.63p compared to the five-year average.
Pig prices have been on a steady upwards trend for several months and are gradually closing the gap towards last year’s high levels. Prices are being supported by both continued demand from retailers and a tighter supply of clean pigs compared to earlier in the year.
Estimated throughput for the week totalled 172,100 head, down 3% (5,500 head) week-on-week.
Carcase weights averaged 86.5kg, up just 40g compared to the previous week, however still up by just over 2kg on the same week this time last year.
The EU-spec APP averaged 158.52p/kg for the week ending 5 June, an increase of 1.97p on the previous week. The gap between the SPP and the APP has narrowed to 3.49p.
30kg weaners averaged £52.16/head for the week ending 12 June, down by £7.68 on the same week last year. Unfortunately, we were unable to publish a price for 7kg weaners this week.
