GB finished pig prices pull back a little

Wednesday, 15 April 2020

The EU-spec SPP paused in its upward path in the week ending 11 April, averaging 163.63p/kg, 0.26p lower than in the previous week. Estimated slaughter for the week totalled 165,300 head, 11,500 head fewer than in the previous week.

Figures for the latest week run up to the bank holiday weekend, so a drop in throughput would be expected. It may be that variable activity between plants around the Easter period has influenced the slight drop in price, rather than a change in market direction. Reports continue to indicate that supplies of pigs are on the tight side.

Carcase weights averaged 84.98kg, similar to the previous week. Sharper declines this time last year meant weights were over 200g above year earlier levels.

In the week ended 4 April, the EU-spec APP rose by 0.21p. Its premium to the SPP narrowed, to 2.14p.

In week ended 11 April, weaner prices rose on the week. 30kg weaners gained £1.19 to average £58.78/head, while 7kg weaners recorded a greater increase of £1.52 to £43.47/head.
