About Pilton Monitor Farm
- Steanbow Farms became a Monitor Farm in May 2024
- Farm size: 615 ha (of which 354 ha arable)
- Soil type: Heavy clay
- Rotation: Winter wheat, maize and short-term grass
- Non-arable enterprises: 180 dairy cows (on the Agri-EPI/CIEL unit), 485,000 broiler chickens, biomass boiler and solar panels
Steanbow Farms’ mission is to turn a profit whilst taking care of personnel, livestock and land. The family-run farm is always striving to produce high-quality food sustainably.
When conditions allow, cereals are min-tilled and multispecies cover crops are planted after wheat before going into maize.
Neil and Michael aren’t ones to shy away from change and are always looking to step out of their comfort zone. They don’t do this blindly and look to data and case studies to support their decisions.
They see the Monitor Farm programme as a way to continue this practice, bringing industry expertise onto their farm to discuss innovative ideas and share their learnings with like-minded farmers.
“Becoming a Monitor Farm isn’t an opportunity that comes around very often so it’s something we’d like to grab with both hands.”
