About Perkins Lodge (2017 - 2021)

  • Beef and Lamb Strategic Farmer from 2017 until 2021

  • 200ha mixed farm in Northamptonshire

  • Spring calving suckler herd consisting of approximately 95 Stabiliser and Hereford x Friesian cows.

  • Youngstock finished and sold deadweight

  • TB is a constant challenge for the farm

When Mark joined the Strategic Farm programme his aims were to:

  • Improve the maternal performance of the cows
  • Implement rotational grazing
  • Reduce antibiotic use

In 2017 the suckler herd consisted mainly of Hereford cross Freisian suckler cows, sourced privately. As time went on it was becoming increasingly difficult for Mark to source good quality, healthy heifers as replacements. During the programme he therefore focused on moving to a homebred heifer replacement policy.

Mark explains his change in replacement policy further during this webinar. Listen again to learn more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu_QgpYgPH4

Other changes Mark has made include implementing rotational grazing which has helped reduce his cost of production. He has also tweaked the finishing ration to reduce the age at slaughter. Using advice from a nutritionist, Mark includes ammonia treated homegrown cereals which has resulted in an increase in growth rates.
