Crop protection senior scientist: Pesticide Regulation

Joe Martin joined AHDB in July 2015 and has recently taken on responsibilities for the Minor Use (EAMU) programme for AHDB working with growers, industry, and regulators to provide crop protection solutions for horticulture. He is also a Crop Protection Senior Scientist with responsibilities within horticulture for a range of different crop protection projects including the lead on SCEPTREplus and AMBER.


Within the Crop Health and Protection team, he previously had responsibilities for weeds across all crops with the strategic aim of creating resilient IPM systems decreasingly reliant on pesticides, helping to boost the competitiveness and sustainability of the industry.


Having completed a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology specialising in Crop Protection at Nottingham Trent University, Joe worked for the Laboratory of the Government Chemist helping to develop methods for detecting GM in different food stuffs. He then joined Eurofins Agroscience Services, formally Agrisearch, as an R & D Agronomist carrying out regulatory and commercial trials on many different pesticide products in both agricultural and horticultural crops assessing efficacious nature of new and existing agrochemicals as well as carrying out trials generating residue data. During this time, he gained his BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection.


In total, Joe spent 19 years with Eurofins Agroscience Services and progressed in different roles, including managing programmes of work being run across Europe. These programme involved the generation of data for a range of different agrochemical companies, coordinating and managing Trials Teams as Field Technical Manager and, for the last four years, working as Country Manager responsible for the field side of the business in the UK and Ireland.
