EU wholesale prices
Updated 17 July 2025
An overview of how the dairy markets are moving in the EU. Price series comparing average EU wholesale prices of butter, SMP, WMP and cheese. They are updated on a monthly basis.
Monthly overview
In June, wholesale price movements of dairy products in Europe remained relatively stable.
Milk production in Europe is now reportedly making small gains year-on-year, driven by a surge of collections in Ireland, France, Romania, and Poland.
Some sliding of market prices could be expected, coinciding with holiday season, but this has come off the back of a period of decline with lower than normal stocks.
Butter prices were 1.1% higher month-on-month and recorded a significant increase of 15.9% year-on-year.
Milk output is seasonally declining in the region and output remains down from year-ago levels. Strong demand continued to support the market.
SMP prices were marginally down by 0.5% month-on-month in June. Demand was reported to be strengthening, and production was lighter. SMP prices remained competitive on the global market.
WMP prices remained relatively stable month-on-month (-0.3%) but increased 14.3% compared to previous year.
Demand for WMP is strong in Europe while export interest is reportedly steady. Seasonally lower milk outputs have contributed to lighter WMP production.
The average cheese price increased by 0.6% this month. Gouda, Emmental and Cheddar prices increased by 1.3%, 1.0% and 0.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, Edam declined by 0.5%.
