Offering flexibility when grazing conditions are adverse, good quality, high digestible and high energy silage, made early in the season can be your best insurance policy against poor weather. It reduces your requirement for purchased concentrate feed, boosting milk solids and overall yields from homegrown forage.

In this session, you will hear about the practicalities, key processes, and targets in producing high-quality silage for your cows and youngstock with the support of Dave Davies, of Silage Solutions.

In this session you will learn about:

Multi cut systems; the way forward? The impact of growth stage at cutting on silage quality

Using silaging as a tool to manage grazing platform quality

Managing the crop for minimal losses; from standing grass to feeding out

The foundations of achieving good silage preservation

The key measures of silage nutritional value fed and cow performance

This project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government. There are 150 replacements, some reared off-farm.

Cockhaise Farm owns 142ha and contract-farms or rents a further 162ha. With just 8–12ha down to arable crops this means this farm is a grass-based unit operating multi-species swards and trying out some 22ha of lucerne and Timothy this year.

The farm has been organic for 20 years and Dan is now the contractor, owning 90% of the cows on a 50:50 profit share basis. He employs two full-time and one-part time staff.

To compare your performance with Cockhaise Farm or to learn more about their story visit www.ahdb.org.uk/farm-excellence/cockhaise-farm

About Strategic Dairy Farms

Strategic dairy farms aim to help farmers learn from each other through regular on-farm meetings where we will share key performance data and showcase what the best farmers are doing.

They form part of the Optimal Dairy Systems programme which aims to help dairy farmers reduce costs and increase efficiency by focusing on either a tight block or all-year-round calving system.

The growing network of strategic dairy farms has calculated KPIs for their enterprises which are shared at meetings and published online. These are physical and financial performance measures that are critical to success. Farmers can benchmark their businesses against these KPIs to help identify areas for improvement.

Follow the programme and find other local SDFs at www.ahdb.org.uk/farm-excellence

Thu, 21 May 2020 11:44:20 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/strategic-dairy-farm-launch-cockhaise-farm-sussexDairy performance results 2018/19 https://ahdb.org.uk:443/knowledge-library/dairy-performance-results-2018-19Dairy performance results 2018/19 Mon, 23 Mar 2020 11:45:07 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/knowledge-library/dairy-performance-results-2018-19Consider business implicationshttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/consider-business-implicationsConsider business implicationsMon, 17 Feb 2020 11:30:00 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/consider-business-implicationsReview current farm performancehttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/review-current-farm-performanceReview current farm performanceMon, 17 Feb 2020 11:26:00 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/review-current-farm-performanceDairy Tech Conference: Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshirehttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/dairy-tech-conference-stoneleigh-park-warwickshire
We look forward to welcoming you at Dairy Tech 2020.

On the stand

Pop over to our stand for a cup of tea or coffee with our friendly team and learn more about:

How Quarter Pro will help you significantly reduce instances of mastitis in your herd

What it is like to be a Strategic Dairy Farmer through the eyes Joe Carter of Carpenters Farm

How you can gain access to consultants and other farmers feedback at events near you

Why you should access our Herd Genetic Reports to help inform your breeding decisions

How all year round calvers can access help with monitoring transition success

What AHDB has been doing to support the dairy industry around consumer opinion

In seminars and talks

Join DR James Breen in the Animal Welfare Workshop Area at 12.30 pm to find out how Quarter Pro can help you reduce instances of mastitis in your herd

Join Nic Parsons, our Head of Dairy Development in the Dairy Hub at 1,20pm to find out why there has never been a better time to engage with your local Strategic Dairy Farm

Find out more about making the most our of apprenticeships between 10 am and 11 am in the Skills Studio

AHDB Strategic Dairy Farmer Karen Halton will also be contributing to two seminars on calf health in the Animal Heath Workshops area at 10 am and 1 pm.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.
Mon, 27 Jan 2020 13:06:03 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/dairy-tech-conference-stoneleigh-park-warwickshireMastitis focus for next strategic dairy farm meetinghttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/mastitis-focus-for-next-strategic-dairy-farm-meetingMastitis focus for next strategic dairy farm meetingThu, 19 Sep 2019 10:16:48 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/mastitis-focus-for-next-strategic-dairy-farm-meetingAHDB food and farming podcasthttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/food-farming-podcastAHDB food and farming podcastTue, 20 Aug 2019 11:55:00 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/food-farming-podcastAmerican dairy welfare expert visits Scotlandhttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/american-welfare-expert-visits-scotlandAmerican dairy welfare expert visits ScotlandFri, 31 May 2019 09:38:49 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/american-welfare-expert-visits-scotlandMeeting focuses on breeding high quality cattlehttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/meeting-focuses-on-breeding-high-quality-cattleMeeting focuses on breeding high quality cattleTue, 16 Apr 2019 09:28:13 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/news/meeting-focuses-on-breeding-high-quality-cattle
