Join AHDB, HCC and QMS for a brand new CPD course focused on developing a structured approach to improving neonatal survival on beef and sheep farms. The latest research, led by the University of Edinburgh, has shown that beef and sheep farmers are highly motivated to improve neonatal outcomes, however they often attribute external factors as limiting their ability to make changes to their practice. Alongside the multifactorial nature of neonatal mortality, efforts to improve neonatal survival must be tailored to the farm’s specific circumstance.

Join us and the research team to learn how to do this using the Target Survival plan to help your clients work towards improving survivability on their farm. This plan will allow you to work together with your clients to agree farm specific actions to ensure success in improving lamb and calf survivability.

The CPD will cover:

• The latest lessons from detailed interviews with vets and farmers, including positive discussions to improve survivability

• Overcoming the stumbling blocks to increasing survival

• Practical benchmarking and target setting

• The latest knowledge on the biological drivers of survival

• Hands-on case study work

An initial 25 places (in each region) are offered free, on a first come first served basis, on the anticipation that feedback will be provided by attendees following on farm implementation. Therefore by enrolling on this training you agree to be contacted by HCC, QMS, or AHDB 6-12 months after the course to request your feedback. Your valuable feedback will be used to evaluate and improve the Target Survival Plan and training.

The project was funded by the three levy boards: AHDB, HCC and QMS under the ring-fenced fund, an interim arrangement while a long-term solution is sought on the issue of levies being collected at point of slaughter in England for animals which have been reared in Scotland and Wales. The project was led by the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, University of Nottingham and Synergy Farm Health Ltd.

Delegates will need proof of vaccination or recent LFT to attend and face masks will be required.

North Yorkshire Moors Swaledale Group: Final Year Open Day

Challenge Sheep and the value of herbal leys

Join us for the AHDB Challenge Sheep meeting, hosted by Chris Stoate of the GWCT Allerton Project at Loddington. There will be an opportunity to discuss the results from the Challenge Sheep project (long-term project on factors affecting lifetime performance of ewes) with Liz Genever, independent sheep consultant. Results up to weaning for the Challenge Sheep ewes from Abbey Farm will be available, so the impact of a better grass year should be seen. Chris Stoate will provide an overview of the research being carried out into leys at Loddington, including a walking tour of the herbal leys research site, and will lead discussion on how this work could influence future agri-environment policy.

Optimising Lamb Performance: N Yorkshire

Come along to the AHDB Optimising Lamb Performance event, hosted by Joe Clarke at Low Swainby Farm near Bedale. Lamb performance can be impacted by many factors. The genetics of any animal will put a ceiling on its performance. It’s therefore important to raise that ceiling as high as possible by selecting the best rams for your system. Young lambs are also the most efficient on your farm in terms of feed conversion. So correct nutrition delivered in the most cost-effective way will help to maximise growth rates, decrease finishing times and increase profitability.

Beef from Grass project meeting: Devon

Join us for the final AHDB beef from grass meeting, hosted by Bob and Liz Priest at Kingsford Farm near Holsworthy. They farm 180ha organically and run a spring calving herd of 60 suckler cows, selling youngstock as breeding females and finishing the remainder. They have been involved in the AHDB Beef from Grass project for the past three grazing seasons which aims to demonstrate how to improve grassland management on beef farms

Join us for the final AHDB Beef from Grass meeting hosted by Tim Phipps at Bragborough hall near Daventry. Tim farms 180 spring calving suckler cows with bulls finished and females sold for breeding. He has been involved in the AHDB Beef from Grass project for the past four grazing seasons which aims to demonstrate the benefits of improved grassland management on beef farms.
