Kent Monitor Farm: From aphids to action – managing BYDV in cereals

Join AHDB and ADAS for a focused event exploring the latest approaches to managing barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) in cereal crops.

With ongoing challenges around aphid control, insecticide resistance and changing weather patterns, effective BYDV management remains a key priority for arable growers.

The event will bring together researchers, advisers and farmers to share the latest evidence, practical experiences and innovative tools designed to support decision-making on farm.

Attendees will hear updates on current BYDV research, learn about our new BYDV tool and gain insights into insecticide resistance monitoring and integrated management strategies.

The programme also includes practical aphid assessment training, hands-on demonstrations and opportunities to discuss real-world challenges directly with expert speakers and fellow growers.

AgriLeader Grow (ILM Level 3) is suitable for anyone looking to develop leadership abilities and move into management roles.

The course consists of two sessions – communication and leadership – which will be taking place online on 11 January and 15 February 2027.

Please note: you must be able to attend both sessions.

Module 1: Understanding the communication process in the workplace

Improve your communication skills on the farm:

Understand the nature and importance of the communication process in the workplace
Discover the different methods of communication
Learn how to assess the effectiveness of your own communication

Module 2: Understanding leadership

Develop your leadership skills and abilities:

Get a comprehensive overview of leadership and management
Learn about different leadership styles
Find out how to motivate and develop a team
Develop the skills and confidence to succeed in leadership roles

Training dates

Cost: £350+VAT

The training will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. This reduces the time participants need to take out of the business, reduces any biosecurity risk and provides an opportunity for more people to take part in the training.

Mae Dave Gilbert BVetMed MRCVS yn filfeddyg ymgynghorol â thros 20 mlynedd o brofiad o weithio gyda buchesi llaeth y DU. Ar ôl cymhwyso o’r Coleg Milfeddygaeth Brenhinol yn 2005, mae wedi arbenigo ym maes iechyd a ffrwythlondeb buchesi llaeth, gan gyfuno rôl ymgynghori ymarferol ar ffermydd â rôl addysgu ym Mhrifysgol Harper Adams.

Mae Dave yn gyfarwyddwr Dairy Insight a Horizon Dairy Vets, ac mae’n gweithio gyda ffermwyr ledled y DU i wella ffrwythlondeb, iechyd a phroffidioldeb drwy reolaeth ymarferol, seiliedig ar dystiolaeth.

Practical advice to help improve heat detection, increase pregnancy rates and build a fertility strategy tailored to your herd.

Getting cows in calf efficiently is one of the biggest drivers of a profitable dairy business. While there are more heat detection options available than ever before, choosing the right approach for your herd, labour availability and business objectives is key to achieving consistent fertility performance.

Join AHDB and Dave Gilbert from Dairy Insight for this practical, interactive workshop where we'll explore the principles of effective heat detection and how to develop a strategy that works on your farm.

We'll look at how cows express heat, the factors that influence heat behaviour, the strengths of different heat detection methods, and how to monitor and review performance to maximise pregnancy rates.

During the workshop we'll cover:

Understanding the targets – why effective heat detection is fundamental to achieving strong pregnancy rates
Recognising heat expression – how cows display oestrus and the factors that can influence behaviour
Choosing the right tools – comparing visual observation, heat detection aids and activity monitoring technology
Building your heat detection strategy – selecting an approach that fits your herd, facilities, labour and business goals
Measuring success – monitoring key fertility indicators and adapting your strategy to maintain performance

This session is aimed at dairy farmers and herd managers looking to improve herd fertility and profitability.

Dave Gilbert bio

Dave Gilbert BVetMed MRCVS is a dairy veterinary consultant with over 20 years' experience working with UK dairy herds.

After qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College in 2005, he has specialised in dairy herd health and fertility, combining practical farm consultancy with teaching at Harper Adams University.

Dave is a director of Dairy Insight and Horizon Dairy Vets, and works with farmers across the UK to improve herd fertility, health and profitability through evidence-based, practical management.

He is a regular speaker at industry events and has contributed to a number of AHDB knowledge exchange projects on dairy fertility.
