Step beyond the farm gate and gain a behind-the-scenes insight into the UK flour milling industry with an exclusive visit to Heygates Limited.

Hear from George Mason, Director of Wheat Procurement, about what millers look for in wheat, current market requirements and the challenges facing the sector.

The event will include industry insights, an opportunity to ask questions and share experiences, and a guided laboratory tour, providing a practical understanding of grain quality, milling wheat specifications and the factors that influence value throughout the supply chain.

Subject to numbers and site requirements, attendees may also tour the mill and see the journey from grain to flour firsthand.

North East Farm Network: Research in practice 2027

Join us and Newcastle University Farms to explore current arable research and see how emerging evidence could help inform practical on-farm decisions.

This event will provide an introduction to three areas of ongoing research focused on improving crop resilience, productivity and sustainability:

Soil health – exploring the impact of different farming systems, tillage approaches and soil management strategies on crop performance and long-term soil function
Companion cropping in oilseed rape – investigating the role of companion crops and establishment strategies as part of an integrated approach to cabbage stem flea beetle management
Integrated pest management (IPM) – examining the relationship between field margins, pests, beneficial insects and disease pressure within arable systems

Researchers and AHDB specialists will explain the background to each project, why the work is being undertaken and how the findings could support future farm management decisions.

Weather permitting, the event will also include a guided farm walk, providing an opportunity to view a selection of the trial sites and discuss the work directly with those involved.

Following on from our summer event, join host farmer Rob Gemmil and Elizabeth Stockdale (NIAB) for a practical look at soil health, soil structure and how to make the most of nitrogen on farm.

What to expect

Explore Rob's crop rotation and discuss how cropping and soil management can influence soil health, crop performance and nutrient use
Take part in a hands-on soil assessment in the field
See a live demonstration of the VESS (Visual Evaluation of Soil Structure) assessment and learn how to recognise signs of good soil structure, as well as issues such as compaction that could affect rooting and crop growth
Hear how Elizabeth's research and Rob's on-farm experience can help turn science into practical farm management
Discover how soil assessments can inform management decisions and improve nitrogen use efficiency

Join us at Pilton Monitor Farm for a practical discussion on setting maize up for success, from establishment through to its role in the wider arable rotation, with host farmers Neil and Michael Christensen and Jon Myhill of the Maize Growers Association.

Following several years of increasingly variable growing conditions, Jon Myhill will explore how growers can make informed decisions around drilling, soil conditions and weather to give maize the best possible start.

We’ll then bring together our host farmers, Adam North, Agronomist at Hutchinsons, and local farmers for a panel discussion, sharing experiences and practical approaches to maize establishment and management.

The meeting will cover:

Getting maize drilling dates right and avoiding drilling simply by the calendar
Using soil temperature to help inform establishment decisions
Planning for variable weather and changing seasonal conditions
Establishment considerations to give maize the best possible start
