However, there are also some traditional views and assumptions about who is best placed to own or run a family business, and these can create barriers to progress.

Neil Wilson, Executive Director at SAB Advisory Ltd has experience in agriculture and a wealth of strategic leadership, relationship management, banking and markets experience. His farming background means he can relate to the issues at the farm gate and his professional experience allows him to add significant value to any business he works with.

Neil will lead the talk with his professional and personal experiences and discuss the Owen family's thoughts around strategic planning and future-proofing their family business.

This meeting will cover

Goal setting

Succession planning – growth and vision

Financial planning – budgets and cash flow

Working with the wider team – your banker, accountant, etc.

About Potstown Farm

Potstown Farm is located near Lockerbie, Scotland, where Gareth and David Owen farm their all-year-round calving herd of 255 milking cows.

Half of the herd at Potstown are Holsteins and half are Jerseys, milked on a robotics system. They joined the Strategic Dairy Farm programme in 2021, wanting to look at how to maximise their current infrastructure and increase farm efficiency.

Learn more about Potstown farm
Tue, 21 Jan 2025 10:47:29 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/dumfries-planning-for-the-future-of-your-businessDairy discussion groupshttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/dairy-discussion-groupsDairy discussion groupsFri, 17 Jan 2025 09:20:00 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/dairy-discussion-groupsCamborne Monitor Farm: Talking tackle – considerate cultivations with Andy Newboldhttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/camborne-monitor-farm-talking-tackle-considerate-cultivations-with-andy-newbold
The second of our winter series at Camborne will see us tackle the complex issue of considerate cultivations in the context of high rainfall and vegetable break crops.

Join us to discuss considerate cultivation strategies with Andy Newbold of Tillage Live & Agri Machinery news.

Across the country, harvest 2024 exhibited the perils of tight seedbeds and/or inconsiderate cultivations on all but the most forgiving and free-draining of soil types. The protracted wet weather didn’t allow such crops to get away in autumn nor encouraged deeper rooting in spring. The results of these prolonged field conditions we are all painfully aware of.

So how do we manage water and grow profitable crops in these ‘wet west’ or ‘bulbs in rotation’ scenarios without a wholesale return to intensive cultivations and associated expense? Come along to find out.

We will be meeting at the Trevaskis for breakfast before heading back to Cornhill Farm for some static machinery discussions and field work appraisal.

Please bring suitable footwear and clothing for a field walk & outside discussion.

BASIS and NRoSO points will be available.

Find out more about Camborne Monitor Farm
Fri, 13 Dec 2024 15:34:07 GMThttps://ahdb.org.uk:443/events/camborne-monitor-farm-talking-tackle-considerate-cultivations-with-andy-newbold
