Morley Innovation Day including the AHDB Strategic Cereal Farm East open day

The Morley Innovation Day showcases the latest arable advice and research from UK agribusinesses and research organisations.

There will be a mixture of field-based demonstrations and static exhibits, enabling you to interact with leading industry experts.

This event is made possible by the unique relationship between The Morley Agricultural Foundation and Niab delivering farmer-facing long-term agronomy research.

The Morley Agricultural Foundation has a long history of supporting research and also the improvement of knowledge and skills of individuals.

Each exhibitor at the innovation day will be summarising the training opportunities they offer throughout the year. This may range from a half-day workshop to a full PhD.

The aim is to highlight the breadth of opportunities, whether you just want to find out more, or take your career to the next level.

AHDB Strategic Farm East

We will present the research underway at the new AHDB Strategic Cereal Farm East, hosted by David Jones at The Morley Agricultural Foundation.

Topics will include:

Cultural control of grass weeds
Decision support for managing BYDV risk
Improving nutrient use efficiency

Niab field demonstration tours

Access Niab’s latest agronomy and soils research and demonstrations at Morley Farms, alongside impartial variety and agronomy advice from our regional agronomy team and crop specialists.

Tour groups start in the demonstration fields at regular intervals from 10am through to 2pm, and include:

Winter wheat and barley varieties – Clare Leaman
Winter wheat disease management – Dr Aoife O’Driscoll

Lean management workshop: North Yorkshire

Join us in North Yorkshire, for an engaging and practical session focused on lean management led by consultant Neil Fedden of Fedden USP.

The day will be split into two interactive elements.

In the morning, attendees will take part in a hands-on business simulation workshop to explore the core principles of lean management and how they apply in practice.

In the afternoon, we'll head out on farm for a guided 'waste walk', applying lean thinking in a real-world setting. Working through a specific farm operation, the group will identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement with their newly acquired skills, with the aim of enhancing operational efficiency and delivering better value to the farm business.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with their own lean improvement plan and the necessary skills to strengthen their own farm business efficiencies.

Attendance is limited to 20 and lunch will be provided.

Join us at Kingsclere Monitor Farm for a hands on workshop showing how common weeds can act as plant bio-indicators to assess soil health and guide better farm decisions.

What to expect

Dr Chris Maughan and host farmer, Tim May, introduce the concept of plant bio-indicators – the use of naturally occurring weeds to diagnose soil health quickly and cost-effectively
Take part in guided plant ID, group-based field surveys and structured exercises to interpret what plant communities reveal about compaction, nutrient status and wider soil function
With contrasting field sites, real-world examples and expert-led discussion, leave the workshop equipped with simple tools to better understand your soils and inform future management decisions

Whether you're looking to improve crop establishment, refine cultivations or bolster soil resilience, this session offers practical insights you can take straight back to the farm.

This meeing will be begin at the Vine, followed by a farm walk, then returning to the Vine for a light lunch.
