Measuring and Managing Soil Organic Matter

Soil organic matter is the term used for all living, or once-living, materials within, or added to, the soil. This factsheet takes a closer look at how you can measure and add soil organic matter.

There are no commonly agreed thresholds given for soil organic matter.

However, there have been a number of research projects that have reviewed work on soil organic matter, especially Defra projects SP0306 and SP0310.

These have allowed the AHDB-BBRO Soil Biology and Soil Health Partnership to develop some draft target values for farmers in England and Wales.

The draft traffic light values are given in the linked document below and all feedback from practice will be warmly welcomed (please contact: elizabeth.stockdale@niab.com).
