You are invited to join us next month for a farm walk at the new AHDB Thame Monitor Farm summer launch meeting hosted by Garth Weston

We look forward to welcoming you on-farm for a look around the new AHDB Monitor Farm, hearing what the farm aims to get out of the monitor farm programme. We’ll also cover other key topics including their current rotation and how Garth aims to improve it, integrating livestock into the arable rotation, black grass management, crop establishment and nutrition strategies.

This meeting is free to attend, but please register using the 'Book Now' button below. BASIS and NRoSO points will also be available for attending this meeting.

What will this meeting cover?

  • Crop Rotation – Current crop rotation, what are the benefits and limitations?
  • Integration of livestock in the arable rotation – Review the positives and negatives of integrating sheep into the arable rotation. Discussion around cover crops, leys, infrastructure.
  • Blackgrass management – Discuss current blackgrass control methods and how we can build a robust system, utilising livestock, to control grass weeds.
  • Reduce reliance on fertiliser and agrochemicals – Discuss how options to reduce reliance whilst maintaining profitability and production
  • Cover crops – Discuss Garths catch / cover crops in the rotation and the plans going forward
  • SWOT analysis and feedback from Farm Walk

Garth has spent the last 6 years farming 1000 acres just outside Thame and has joined the AHDB Monitor Farm Programme for the three-year term 2022 / 25. His ambition is to continue improving his business by focusing on integrating his livestock into the arable rotation, understand why we should integrate the two systems and demonstrate that to a wider audience, managing low-lying heavy land and how best to utilise it through rotation, soil health and minimising inputs. He is keen to make regenerative practices work on his farm and open up discussions that benefit other farmers, including those around maintaining productivity and profitability, understanding costs, and becoming a true mixed farm.

The event is free to attend, but please register to allow us to cater for you accordingly. If weather permits there will be a field walk so, please bring suitable footwear & clothing.

BASIS and NRoSO points will be available.
