UK human and industrial cereal usage
This information shows the use of cereals by flour millers, brewers maltsters and distillers (monthly) and oat millers (quarterly) in the UK. It is used to produce the UK cereals supply and demand estimates.
Overview: November 2019
- In November, wheat usage by the UK milling industry(1) decreased by 1.5% on the year to 506.7 thousand tonnes. Home grown wheat usage declined by 0.6% over the same period to 450.7 thousand tonnes. Imported wheat usage was down 8.3% to 56.0 thousand tonnes.
- Season to date (Jul-Nov) total wheat usage by UK millers(1) is down 11.1% on the same period in 2018/19 at 2.441 million tonnes. Over the same period home grown wheat usage is down 1.7% to 2.119 million tonnes, while imported demand is 45.3% less at 322.2 thousand tonnes.
- At 157.5 thousand tonnes, UK brewers, maltsters and distillers used 6.5% more barley year on year in November. Over the same period, 15.6% less wheat was used at 53.4 thousand tonnes.
