Mixed bag for GB lamb prices

Thursday, 5 November 2020

In the week ending 4 November, the GB NSL liveweight SQQ price jumped by over 10p to average 209.55p/kg. The measure currently stands at nearly 32p above last year’s price and nearly 42p above the five-year average for the time of year.

Total lamb throughput at British auction marts during the week was estimated to be 129,600 head, up an impressive 24% on the week and up 18% on the same week last year.

Reports suggest trade has been buoyed ahead of the second national lockdown in England, (in force as of today - 5 Nov). During the first lockdown we saw an increase in retail demand, as more people were cooking at home instead of eating out. For lamb, takeaways also helped sales, which could be important during the second lockdown.

The picture was less positive on the deadweight front. In the week ending 31 October, the GB NSL deadweight SQQ price slipped by 5p on the week to average 436.1p/kg. Despite this, the measure is still 59p above the same week last year. Estimated slaughter at British abattoirs stood at 246,800 head, down 8% on the week, and down 10% on the same week last year.
