Deadweight prime prices edge higher, cows continue down

In the week ending 7 November, the GB overall prime deadweight cattle price averaged 369.2p/kg, a rise of nearly 2p on the week. The measure is now over 45p above last year’s price for the same week, and over 21p above the five-year average.

Estimated prime throughput at British abattoirs totalled 32,600 head for the week, up 2% (1,000 head) on the week before. Despite the weekly rise, AHDB figures show that prime throughput continues to run below that of last year, with the latest week’s figures back over 7% year-on-year.

Weekly prime cattle price movements for w/e 7 November:

  • Steers overall: 370.1p/kg, up 1.8p
  • Heifers overall: 369.5p/kg, up 1.8p
  • Young bulls overall: 356.0p/kg, up 2.4p

Cull cow prices continued their downwards trajectory, with the overall price falling by 8.3p on the week to average 229.5p/kg. Despite the fall, the measure is still considerably higher than both where it was last year (+32p) and the five-year average (+21p). Estimated cull cow throughput at British abattoirs slipped by 3% (400 head) on the week to 13,600 head.
