Coronavirus: Impact on AHDB-supported PhD studentships

Guidance for supervisors and students

Please see the letter regarding our approach to studentships here. Further advice and information will be published on our main AHDB coronavirus FAQ page.

AHDB Studentship Programme: Update to Researchers - June 2020

For a number of reasons, AHDB will not be issuing a call for PhD studentships in 2020 (for an October 2021 start). We expect to publish a five-year strategy (2020-2025) in the coming months, and our technical programmes will be developed to address this new strategy. Upon publication we will send you a link to the AHDB Strategy (2020-2025) document.

Any studentships in the future will be closely aligned to the research and expertise needs for our sectors identified to address our technical priorities. At the same time, the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted on the cost of our studentship programme and we need to manage the impact on the AHDB budget overall.

We will be taking time over the next year, as we develop our technical programmes, to identify areas that should be addressed by supporting studentships. We will also be considering a range of approaches, that might include supporting other categories of student from undergraduates through masters to doctoral level students.

Where we identify topics suitable for PhD studentships, we will expect to issue a call in Spring of 2021 with a view to aligning the timing of our call process with that of the various doctoral training partnerships to maximise the possibility of joint funding opportunities.

Please note that funding for existing studentships (with a contract in place) will not be affected.
