Milk forecasting forum
Updated 25 June 2020
Milk production is a fundamental driver of market dynamics in Great Britain. We hold a milk forecasting forum twice a year, where representatives from across the industry debate, analyse and discuss the key factors influencing production. Here you can find the latest information shared with the group.
The AHDB Milk Forecasting Forum (MFF) met on the 11 February to discuss the factors impacting on future GB milk production. These included:
- The rise in milk solids, with causes including good cow condition, silage quality, and improving herd genetics
- How ground conditions following a wet autumn could affect spring turnout and delay this year’s peak
- The increasing shift towards sorted inseminations, which could help reduce unwanted bull calves and potentially accelerate genetic improvements in herds.

GB milk production forecast - June 2020
According to our June forecast, GB milk production is expected to reach 12.44bn litres in 2020/21, down 0.7% on 2019/20.
GB milk solids production forecast - April 2020
While the milk production forecast was for no change year-on-year, our milk solids forecasts predicts a marginal (0.2%) increase in solids (fat + protein) production, based on long-term genetic improvements. However, this does not account for the potential impacts of coronavirus on milk production. For more information, read our article here.
