UK human and industrial cereal usage
This information shows the use of cereals by flour millers, brewers maltsters and distillers (monthly) and oat millers (quarterly) in the UK. It is used to produce the UK cereals supply and demand estimates.
Overview: April 2020
- In April 2020, wheat used by the UK milling industry(1) was 450.2 thousand tonnes, an increase of 1.1% year on year. Home grown wheat usage was at 396.8 thousand tonnes, up 2.8% and imported wheat usage was down 9.9% at 53.4 thousand tonnes.
- From July to April 5.052 million tonnes of wheat was used by UK flour millers(1), down 1.4% on the same period in 2018/19. Home grown wheat usage is at 4.420 million tonnes, 4.8% higher over the same period. Imported wheat usage is 30.2% lower at 631.9 thousand tonnes.
- UK brewers, maltsters and distillers used 114.7 thousand tonnes of barley in April 2020, 28.1% less than in April 2019. 53.9 thousand tonnes of wheat was used, 21.1% less year on year. Season to date (Jul-Apr) barley usage is down 2.1% on season earlier levels at 1.538 million tonnes.
