UK human and industrial cereal usage
This information shows the use of cereals by flour millers, brewers maltsters and distillers (monthly) and oat millers (quarterly) in the UK. It is used to produce the UK cereals supply and demand estimates.
Overview: May 2020
- Wheat used by the UK milling industry(1) in May 2020 was up 1.8% on year earlier levels at 453.1 thousand tonnes. Home grown wheat usage was up 7.7% at 402.5 thousand tonnes and imported wheat usage was down 29.3% at 50.5 thousand tonnes.
- Season to date (Jul-May) total wheat usage by UK flour millers(1) is at 5.505 million tonnes, down 1.1% on the same period in 2018/19. Home grown wheat usage is up 5.0% at 4.822 million tonnes while imported wheat usage is 30.1% lower at 682.4 thousand tonnes.
- In May 2020, UK brewers, maltsters and distillers used 113.4 thousand tonnes of barley, 25.7% less than in May 2019. Wheat usage was at 63.3 thousand tonnes, 5.5% higher year on year. From July 2019 to May 2020, barley usage is down 4.2% year on year at 1.652 million tonnes.
