UK human and industrial cereal usage

This information shows the use of cereals by flour millers, brewers maltsters and distillers (monthly) and oat millers (quarterly) in the UK. It is used to produce the UK cereals supply and demand estimates.

Overview: October 2020

  • In October 2020 wheat usage by the UK milling industry(1) was 3.6% lower on the year at 470.2 thousand tonnes. Home grown wheat usage was down 22.4% to 333.3 thousand tonnes and imported wheat usage was 134% more at 136.9 thousand tonnes. 
  • Season to date (Jul-Oct), wheat usage by UK millers(1) is up 0.6% compared to year earlier levels at 1.944 million tonnes. Over the same period, home grown usage was down by 9.9% and imported wheat usage increased by 67.2% 
  • Barley usage by UK brewers, maltsters and distillers decreased by 7.2% year on year to 143.1 thousand tonnes in October. Wheat usage by UK brewers, maltsters and distillers in October was 49.7% higher than the same period last year at 80.4 thousand tonnes.
