UK human and industrial cereal usage

This information shows the use of cereals by flour millers, brewers maltsters and distillers (monthly) and oat millers (quarterly) in the UK. It is used to produce the UK cereals supply and demand estimates.

Overview: February 2020

  • In February, UK flour millers(1) used 9.0% more wheat year on year at 484.9 thousand tonnes. Home grown wheat usage was 9.9% higher over the same period, at 427.5 thousand tonnes and imported wheat usage was 2.7% higher at 57.5 thousand tonnes.
  • At 3.997 million tonnes, season to date (Jul-Feb) wheat usage by UK flour millers(1) is 3.3% down on the same period in 2018/19. Home grown wheat usage is up 3.8% at 3.489 million tonnes. Imported wheat usage is 34.4% lower at 507.7 thousand tonnes.
  • UK brewers, maltsters and distillers used 153.1 thousand tonnes of barley in February, 2.5% less than in February 2019. From July 2019 to February 2020, 1.262 million tonnes of barley was used, 2.1% higher than season earlier levels.
